In my doctoral research, I am exploring, co-designing, & deploying a novel adaptive support system to address burnout among frontline workers, particularly those who support survivors of domestic violence.
recent news
My most recent paper exploring workers’ perspectives of required features, functionalities, and interactions of app-based support for burnout was accepted to CHI 2025
Will be presenting this work with Colleen at the National Network to End Domestic Violence (NNEDV)’s 8th Annual Economic Justice Summit in Philadelphia, PA in March
Recently presented at CSCW 2024 — [read the paper] or view my [CSCW slide deck]
Key Details
Visual and discussion-based design activities (including pod mapping, storyboards, and creative matrices) used in co-design workshops / focus groups with participants. More about the methods & findings in my CSCW 2024 paper.
Established & developed multi-year partnership with The Network: Advocating Against Domestic Violence, a community-based org that runs the Illinois State Domestic Violence Hotline & unites 40+ agencies in Chicagoland that support survivors. I work with their Director of Special Projects, Colleen Norton.
Studies I have designed & led:
[2025] Longitudinal data collection via REDCap (N=40); use of 6 clinical assessments for burnout, secondary traumatic stress (STS), and related phenomena to be used for statistical & ML analysis, future design directions, & later shared with the local community. Also, conducting a human-centered design study to gather feedback on initial prototypes of data dashboards to visualize & interact with participants’ real-world burnout and STS data.
[2024] 3-stage competitive analysis & participatory ideation (N=15); included low to mid-fidelity design prototypes, card sorting-like and ranked feature set activities, rose-bud-thorn, field study & technology probe-inspired methods, & conceptual diagramming analysis
[2023] Co-design/focus group workshop (N=26); included group-based ideation, storyboards, creative matrices, and support network mapping activities
[2022] Exploratory semi-structured interviews (N=16) to explore potential opportunities for tech to support nonprofit human services work
